Symbols & Motifs

Chicago

Chicago is symbolic of home and belonging. The Illinois city is the primary backdrop for the novel, as all of the primary characters live there whenever they’re not traveling for their jobs. The city therefore offers them a place to feel comfortable, granting them all a sense of community, familiarity, and acceptance. While each character has a distinct relationship with Chicago, the city connects the characters to one another amidst their otherwise challenging lives.

For Zanders, Chicago is synonymous with home because this is where the Maddisons live. He is therefore desperate “to stay in Chicago” (334) when he learns that his Raptors contract may not be renewed. He knows that he can find a new team, but he fears the prospect of leaving his home city and moving somewhere else where he would be alone. Chicago offers Zanders the home and family network that he didn’t have during his childhood, and he is therefore protective of his life in the city.

Stevie feels similarly about the city because her brother lives there, and she has deep connections to Senior Dogs of Chicago. When she and Zanders break up, she makes plans to leave Chicago to find a fresh start, but her reluctance to depart is clear when she wishes that she “could take everything that’s [her] life in Chicago” and “bring it with [her]” (390). She and Zanders later decide to stay in Chicago because they value their relationships and support system.

Senior Dogs of Chicago

The dog rescue, Senior Dogs of Chicago (SDOC), represents the power of deeply held passions and the value of helping others. Stevie invests her time and energy in the dog shelter because she enjoys helping the animals. Her volunteer work there has “become sort of a passion project” (58) for her, and she dedicates her time to caring for dogs that are often rejected or overlooked because of their age and appearance. Stevie is empathetic toward these dogs because she knows what it’s like to be an outsider. Furthermore, her volunteer work for SDOC captures her selfless nature. She isn’t interested in the organization because it provides for her financially; instead, she loves SDOC because she finds rescue work rewarding in its own right.

Active Minds of Chicago

Zanders and Maddison’s charity, Active Minds of Chicago symbolizes the power of empathy and highlights Zanders’s need to turn his own negative childhood experiences into something positive. The charity foundation supports “underprivileged young athletes that don’t have the mental health resources they need” (35). Zanders and Maddison’s own mental health journeys inspired them to found this organization and to invest in the lives of Chicago’s youths. Through Active Minds, the friends “raise money […] to cover the costs of therapy sessions for kids who might not be able to afford it but need the help” (35). The charity’s stated mission also illustrates Zanders and Maddison’s empathic natures. Zanders’s involvement in the charity helps Stevie to see Zanders’s true self and to understand his heart.

Zanders’s Pinky Ring

The ring that Zanders wears on his pinky is indicative of his love and deep connection with Stevie despite their various conflicts and issues. Stevie gives Zanders one of her cheap rings at the start of their relationship, and he wears it on his hand throughout the entirety of the novel. The ring appears repeatedly and thus becomes a motif that emphasizes Zanders’s investment in Stevie and his growing attachment to her. Even after they break up, he tells himself that he’s “going to [continue to] wear this fucking cheap-ass ring until the metal disintegrates around [him] because it’s the only part of [Stevie] he still [has]” (378). The ring makes Zanders feel close to Stevie and represents his desire to keep her in his life.
